Daws Heath Dig - test pit sites

Confirmation of suitability, by Cat Ranson, Cambridge Archaeology

Today, Friday 10th May, 2013, I joined Terry Barclay, Bob Delderfield and Cat Ranson of Cambridge Archaeology on a tour of Daws Heath to check out selected test pit sites for the June dig.

Terry (local HEFA coordinator,) Bob Delderfield (local historian) and I welcomed Cat to our part of Essex; this is the first time Cambridge University has been involved in a dig in our area.  Cat marked the specific area in each garden, to be dug by students, with a red peg and took a photograph.

We introduced Cat to Paul Saunders, one of the many volunteers who offered their gardens for the project, and she reassured him that the Cambridge team of archaeologists would be available during the dig to identify any interesting finds.  Paul has already told the local newspaper (Echo) of his excitement about the dig and has promised to keep me informed of any interesting developments!

Please put Thursday 6th June in your diaries if you are interested in the dig. St Michael’s will be serving refreshments from 10am till 12 noon and you will be able to view finds from the previous day.  If you would like to witness something of the archaeological dig, Ages AHA will be at their test pit in St Michael’s field  (weather permitting).

Let us hope the weather is favourable for the dig!
