Hadleigh Public Hall
War Time Memories 1940s
Ian
When on leave from the Merchant Navy, I used to visit the hall for the Saturday evening dances, a five-piece dance band on the stage and the hall packed with serving personnel from around the area, including WRENS from HMS Westcliff.
The dance would end with a mad Palais Glide and then the Waltz, “Who’s Taking You Home Tonight?”
My partner was Joyce Polly, whose family I believe lived in Ash Road. A few years ago at a Hadleigh Forum meeting, I met up with Joyce after over 50 years.
At a recent meeting, I heard from Derek Barber’s sister that Joyce was living in Thorpe Bay. I hope Joyce does not mind me showing her photo, someone may recognise her!

If my memory serves me correctly Georgina married Alex Stenhouse then a player for Southend United, I took some photos at the time and got them processed in time for their reception in the evening. Many years later whilst working I met Alex’s best man, also a United player, in West Yorkshire when I recognised the photo of United on his office wall. (Jones?)
Nice surprise to see a lovely picture of my sister Joyce. Also sorry I missed you Don, I remember you well, what good times they were. Ahhh, Hadleigh was a great place to grow-up in those days!!! Georgina Polley.
This is great, finding out all these connections. I too remember the Polly family, they had a tribe of very pretty daughters, I remember Jean and particularly Georgina, whom I had a great crush on when I was fourteen and at King John’s School. Alas, it came to nought, but I did try to look her up when visiting the UK in the 90s, but I’m afraid she was away on vacation somewhere. Thwarted again!
I remember some of the Polly family, especially the younger ones. I lived in Daws Heath from 1947 until 1954 and Daphney and Malcom Polley who also lived there were friends of mine, but we lost touch when we were older. Pat.
