Sayers Farm: the farm buildings in March 2013

A Local Advisory Group "All Our Stories" expedition

Building Recording Training at Sayers Farm, Hadleigh

Five members of the Local Advisory Group Barbara Wright, Graham Cook, David Hurrell, Terry Barclay, Phil Courtney} were met by Adrian Scruby (Project Manager) and Andy Letch (Project Officer) from Essex County Council Field Archaeology Unit at the entrance to the Country Park.

We gathered to record the buildings of the Old Dairy and Brick Fields before their proposed demolition in 2013/14. The farmhouse itself is not affected by plans to demolish buildings.

We were shown how to draw plans and list as much detail about the buildings and structures as possible.

Two documents were given to us for reference, first a copy of “Sayers Farm Built Heritage Appraisal” produced by Wessex Archaeology of Salisbury, Wiltshire for Essex County Council, from which the images in this article were taken and the other was an English Heritage document on “Understanding Historic Buildings – A Guide to Good Recording.”

  • It would be really interesting to see pictures from inside the buildings as well as more details about the brick works.  Many thanks for all that you are doing to preserve the details of the history.

  • I read this with great interest as these buildings revive many childhood memories. I hope that I may be able to visit them again before demolition takes place.
