Tillie Strickland was getting to know Thimble the hedgehog, under the supervision of Emma Sayer, when I arrived at Hadleigh Farm on Sunday 6th July, 2014. I had come to ask Emma Sayer, Manager of Hadleigh Farm Rare Breed Centre, about some unusual guests she has been accommodating! Three Alpacas: Oreo, Fudge and Valiant.
Emma told me that her friend Jackie, who owns them, wanted a safe home for them while she went away on holiday – apparently they have been spoilt with hay and lots of willow. Emma added that: “After discovering the food bags they settled in pretty quickly.”
Although the three “boys” have been very popular with visitors to the farm, I am told that Dylan the donkey has not been impressed and a little jealous of all the attention they received!
Emma’s favourite is Oreo, and I like Fudge, perhaps because the other two bully him a little. The good news is, if you missed the Alpacas first visit you can see them on their return in August. Of course, Alpacas are not a rare breed, even if they are unusual for Hadleigh, so they will not become permanent residents at the farm.
