Hadleigh Solicitors 1940s

Heard and Coleman

By Ian Hawks

Heard and Coleman had their offices in a building which is now Barclays Bank No 259 London Road.   On development of this site,  they moved to offices above Amos estate agents No 319  London Road. Later, when Mr Heard retired, Mr Coleman took on a new partner; Mr Arnold Davis.

The practice eventually closed down, but the name Coleman is still used by  Barnes Coleman and Co with present day offices in Rectory Road. The attached documents show charges around that time. Mrs. May Coleman was sister to Doctor James of Hadleigh.

This business did not close down. Upon Mr Arnoll Davis's death Graham Jones, a Solicitor from Westcliff, took over the Practice and a few years later sold it to Roger Wetton, a Solicitor who had been in practice in Pitsea. He later took in a partner who was working at Barnes & Taylor another firm of Solicitors whose office had been in the High Street. After amalgamation the firm was called Barnes Coleman and Co. After moving to Rectory Road Roger Wetton retired and Charles Knowles the new Partner sold out to the present firm.

Thanks for the correction and further information, nice to see the name Coleman is still being used.

G W Heard was the Vice Chairman of Benfleet Urban District Council in the 1930s. When he died, his wife had the round seat (that used to be in the bus shelter in the middle of the Church Corner junction in Hadleigh) erected in his memory. When the bus shelter was demolished, the seat was renovated and moved to a place outside St James The Less.
