Discover For Yourself - St James the Less

Hadleigh's historic parish church

We are very fortunate in Hadleigh to have at our centre a Grade I listed parish church.  The current building has existed since Norman times, or is that Saxon times?  You can ask our very knowledgeable Priest-in-Charge, the Reverend David Childs for his opinion, and perhaps book one of his guided tours.

The churchyard is equally fascinating: amongst those at rest are Hadleigh’s own “Cunning” man, James Murrell, the wife of Salvation Army Commissioner, J Allister Smith, Mrs Elizabeth Charlotte Smith and Crimean veteran William John Evans.

St James the Less holds a fete each year at midsummer and I am happy to say that this year some of the Hadleigh & Thundersley Community Archive editors are involved in the festivities as part of the “All Our Stories” project, in fact, we are hoping that our mermaid will make an appearance!  Entrance is free at the Rectory Gardens between 10.30am and 3.30pm on Saturday 29th June, 2013.

Below is a photo of one of the beautiful stained glass windows to be seen inside St James the Less and a short introduction I recorded, when the Rev Childs gave myself and Val Jackson an impromptu tour of the church.
