Hadleigh Parish Council Volunteer Fire Brigade

1920s and 1949

Opposite what is now Lidl, across the London Road and behind Richardsons Electrical Shop, was Hadleigh’s first Fire Station. The garages, then with a corrugated iron roof, are still there.

Peter Maley has kindly furnished the following photograph. In the 1920s picture, 3rd from left stands Jesse Maley and 2nd from right his brother Harry Maley. A high-wheeled cart, a ladder, some ropes, hose and pump… and a storm lantern to find their way. Standing left is Ted Land from South Benfleet, where his father was publican at the Anchor. (So could that perhaps be Harold Layzell on the right?)

It is difficult to place now, but this photo by Ian Hawks shows the Hadleigh Fire Brigade attending a car fire at the top of Castle Lane in 1949. Nothing is recognizable. How Castle Lane has changed…

  • My uncle Ernie Allen was the captain; he was at Hadleigh all the war years. His son and his son-in-law served there.

  • My father William Light was a volunteer Fireman in Hadleigh from approximately 1929 to 31, after which he became salaried. He received a long service medal in 1941. During WW2, his work included fire fighting and motorcycle dispatch riding in and around Hadleigh/Canvey and the dock area. Dad was known as Billy or Sonny by family and friends. He spoke of working with the Smith brothers and Billy Parsfield. He would have been 101 years old this year.

  • I have been led to understand that my great great grandfather was one of the first fireman in Hadleigh; his last name was Snow and I think he’s in St James the Less.
