It must have been in the early 1970s when I chanced on this accident on a very leafy Vicarage Hill. I never found out what had happened, but the Fire Brigade attended and sprayed the ground, righted the upside-down car and maneuvered it onto a trailer. Before Essex Way there was Vicarage Hill and I have been told that in winter bus passengers to Southend had to get off at the bottom and re-join at the top for safety reasons. Early last century there were signs at the top of both Vicarage Hill and Bread and Cheese Hill warning penny-farthing cyclists of the steep gradient ahead.
